Commissioner of Police, Hubballi, Raman Gupta said prima facie it does not seem like a breach of security and that boy must have done it out of enthusiasm, and added that more information is being sought in this regard, reported the news agency ANI.
Three officers of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) were suspended Wednesday following the collapse of an under-construction Bengaluru Metro pillar that killed a mother and son. Software engineer Tejaswini, 28, and her son Vihan, 2.5, were killed in the accident while Tejaswini’s husband Lohith Solake and daughter Vismitha survived.

A “security breach” was witnessed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Karnataka’s Hubballi on Thursday when a boy cut through the security cordon and ran towards the PM with a garland.
Though he was intercepted by the security forces, the boy managed to reach very close to the PM. The Special Protection Group personnel in PM’s security took the garland from the boy and handed it to Modi, who put it inside his car.
The incident happened when the PM was on his way to inaugurate the National Youth Festival in Hubballi. It was a planned roadshow and the street was barricaded on both sides. (Read more)
In the wake of media reports about a leopard sighting on the its campus on January 11, the Bangalore University Thursday asked its students, especially hostellers, faculty and staff to stay alert and restrict movement in the night.
The university’s circular also advised that any sighting of the leopard should be reported to the higher-ups in the administration. The administration has also asked the forest department to trap the leopard.
On Wednesday, a few students had claimed that they saw a leopard on the university campus. (Read more)

Facing flak from the Karnataka High Court over the delay in granting permission to attach properties worth Rs 19.14 crore of mining baron Janardhan Reddy, the State Government Thursday authorised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to attach these properties.
The government order, dated January 12, permitted the investigating officer of the case to attach the “scheduled excess properties of Shri G Janardhan Reddy in his name as well as in the names of his wife and his companies and also other properties…” (Read more)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday accepted a garland offered by a boy who apparently broke through the barricade and rushed towards his car as he held a roadshow ahead of the inaugural ceremony of the National Youth Festival here.
Modi was standing on the running board of his moving car and waving at an enthusiastic crowd that lined up both sides of the road as he headed for the Railway Sports Ground from the airport when the incident happened.
The Prime Minister extended his hand to accept the garland from above the car door but could not reach out to the boy. Security officials accompanying him on the road got hold of the garland and handed it over to the Prime Minister who put it inside the car. (Read more)

The body of a Bajrang Dal activist was found in the Netravati river in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Pujari S (36), who is a resident of Sajipa in Bantwal taluk. Local residents found an abandoned bike on the old bridge of Panemangaluru and reported it to the police. After a search, police found the body in the Netravati river, and it has been sent for post-mortem. (PTI)

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed Isha Yoga Centre to maintain the status quo on construction activity being carried out near Nandi Hills in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapura district.
Hearing a public interest litigation filed by Kyathappa S and others, a division bench of Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale and Justice Ashok S Kinagi permitted the petitioners to amend their petition within a week to allow them to raise a challenge to the notification issued by the government granting land to the Isha Yoga Centre and adjourned the matter for three weeks.
However, after the senior counsel representing Isha Yoga Centre appeared before the court in the afternoon and informed that there was urgency in hearing the matter as Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was scheduled to unveil the 112-feet tall Adiyogi Shiva statue on Sunday, the court said the matter would be heard on Friday. RV University (RVU) has allocated Rs. 10 crores for merit scholarships for the ensuing academic year starting in August 2023. It will benefit 500 students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
Nearly 200 B.Tech. students and 50 B.Sc. students in the School of Computer Science Engineering will benefit from these scholarships, besides 75 students pursuing five-year integrated B.A.LL.B. and B.B.A.LL.B. as well as LL.M. programmes in the School of Law. These scholarships will cover nearly 40 students each from the School of Liberal Arts and Science and School of Design and Innovation. 80 merit scholarships have been proposed for students pursuing B.B.A, B.Com. and B.A. (Economics) programmes in the School of Business and School of Economics.
Bangalore-based RVU is awarding these scholarships to enable meritorious students to pursue their academic aspirations and create a talent-pool of future leaders. These include 100%, 50% and 25% scholarships for study in the first year. Renewal of scholarships is based on maintaining merit. As the admissions for the academic year 2023-2024 are open, students can apply for the scholarships for this year.
Following the death of a mother and her toddler after an under-construction pillar at Nagavara crashed on them on Tuesday, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) MD Anjum Parvez Wednesday said the corporation will now be changing the reinforcement construction process by switching to two-stage casting.
In technical terms, reinforcement for concrete is provided by embedding deformed steel bars or welded wire fabric within freshly-made concrete at the time of casting the pillar. The purpose of reinforcement is to provide additional strength for concrete where it is needed. (Read more)
“She saw the pillar falling and screamed. By the time I reacted, it had fallen on them.” A day after the collapse of an under-construction metro pillar in Bengaluru, civil engineer Lohith Kumar V Solake had pointed questions for the construction company and metro authorities, holding them responsible for the death of his wife Tejaswini and son Vihan.
Solake and Tejaswini, a 28-year-old software engineer, were on their way to drop off their two-year-old twins at a play school on Tuesday.
Solake was riding a bike with his daughter Vismitha behind him. Tejaswini was seated at the rear with Vihan in front of her. What happened next was a blur for Solake. “A bus was there on the other side and a biker next to me took an unusual cut to the left. At the same time, I heard Tejaswini screaming. Absence of safety engineers, election-oriented deadlines and lack of transparency on safety policies, mobility experts and citizen groups Wednesday raised a series of issues plaguing the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The issues were pointed out a day after a mother and her toddler son died after an under-construction Metro pillar collapsed in Bengaluru.
Satya Arikutharam, an independent mobility activist, said the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is not transparent about their safety policies. Speaking to indianexpress.com, he said, “It is a shame that the BMRCL has not even published the health and safety policies under the policies section of their website. There has to be independent engineers deployed to review the construction progress and check on the safety aspects during the construction.” (Read more)
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai directed officials to establish the mini-textile parks in 25 taluks of the State that have a larger concentration of weavers' population.
Speaking after launching Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for the handloom and power loom weavers/workers under the "Nekar Sanman Scheme" (providing financial assistance), he said the mini textile parks will help weavers starting from the processing of cotton to manufacturing readymade garments.
"I have close links with weavers individually and saw their problems from the closeness. The weavers must focus on the quality of products and come forward for exports. The market must be extended through the digital forum and for this, the Department of Handlooms and Textile will extend full support. Steps are being taken to reach an agreement with Amazon, Flipkart, and other Online players," he said. (PTI)

Three Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the country will be developed into 'Green ITIs' by the non-profit organization Quest Alliance.The first ITI in the country to go green will be the Government Women's ITI in Mangalore, Karnataka.The work on the Green ITI started earlier this month.The pilot initiative will also be launched in two other ITIs: Government ITI Halol, Gujarat and Government ITI Srikona, Silchar in Assam.
Under the pilot project, Quest Alliance will work with the selected institutions to co-create Green ITIs. The greening of the ITIs will be taken up at three levels- infrastructural, cognitive and learner preparedness for green careers.
At the infrastructural level, the campuses of these ITIs will be made environment-friendly with the end objective of making them carbon-neutral. Quest Alliance will conduct a green audit of infrastructure and a personalised plan will be created for each of the selected ITIs based on the audit findings. The green plan envisages rainwater harvesting, solar power, waste management, and sustainable gardening. The pilot project will work towards developing a green mindset among students through a host of programmes such as hackathons, workshops, sensitisation programmes, etc.

The father of the woman, who was killed along with her toddler son after a pillar at an under-construction site of the Bangalore Metro fell on them, Wednesday asked the Karnataka government to punish those responsible for the accident.
On Tuesday, software engineer Tejaswini, 28, and her son Vihan, 2.5, were killed after a pillar at an under-construction site of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) fell on the motorcycle they were travelling on. She was heading to work with her husband Lohith Solake, and drop her daughter Vismitha and son Vihan at a playschool. Solake and Vismitha survived the accident.
An under-construction Metro pillar at the Nagawara station came crashing down near Hennur main road, killing Tejaswini and her son, Vihan, while her husband Lohith and daughter miraculously escaped unhurt.
The remarks of Madan, Tejaswini’s father, came after BMRCL announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh and Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said Rs 10 lakh each will be given to the family of the deceased.
Speaking to the media, Madan said it is not about compensation. “I don’t need their compensation. I will pay them Rs 1 crore. Can the chief minister bring back my daughter and grandson’s lives? It is not about money. There was a clear lapse on part of BMRCL and contractor Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd (NCC),” he said. (Read more)
Bengaluru Metro’s never-ending tale of tragedy
A mother and her toddler son died after an under-construction Metro pillar collapsed in Bengaluru Tuesday. This is the latest incident in a series of accidents involving the ongoing Metro construction work in India’s IT capital.
In December 2020, Santosh Hansda, 21, who worked as a laborer with the BMRCL (Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited), died after a 16mm cable pierced his head. Santosh was assigned to cable stressing work and he was busy working on a 30 feet tall metro pillar when a wedge plate fell on the other side and put pressure on the machine.
16mm Selector Push Button The cable jutted out and pierced Santosh’s head. He was shifted to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. In February 2020, Metro worker Srikakulam, 56, died while he was carrying out work related to the installation of an escalator at Pattanagere Metro station.
